Ray Cantrell is a Chartered Building Services Engineer with experience in the health, education, commercial, industrial, sheltered housing, utilities and leisure sectors. From leaving school he joined the Post Office as a student apprentice and studied electrical engineering at the University of Leeds. After working in various engineering positions in the Post Office he became responsible for the Colchester office of National Design Consultancy, an 'in house' building engineering services practice.

In 1999 he joined Ingleton Wood to set up the Colchester office and expand the engineering resource of the practice. During this time he was involved in supervision of other engineering staff but also worked "hands on" on a wide range of commissions. On much of the design work his role was largely supervisory, but survey and similar work was generally personally undertaken.

In May 2007 he left Ingleton Wood to set up R I Cantrell Engineer Ltd.

He is a member of the RICS Dilapidations Forum.
